Two of these three beautiful Romantic choral works feature arrangements made by Brahms for piano duet. Brahms’ Requiem has become very popular recently in his piano duet version, but his magnificent Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) was also published in this format, and tonight’s is possible its first UK performance.
Brahms was also the editor of the first complete edition of Schubert’s works, and he also published Schubert’s great Mass in Eb in a version for piano duet. These duet versions were meant for domestic performance, but are wonderfully crafted in their own right.
The opener, Schubert’s superb creation Mirjams Siegesgesang (Song of Victory) for soprano and chorus, exists only in a very difficult solo piano version. He almost certainly intended to orchestrate the work, and, to complete our trilogy in the spirit of Brahms, our pianists have devised their own playable duet version.
